About the Primary Section

The Primary Section of Mayoor School Siliguri, comprising Classes III to V, believes that learning goes beyond textbooks and classroom walls. Our focus is on Experiential Learning and Learning by Doing, where children explore, experiment and discover concepts through real-life experiences.

In Mathematics, we use the BaLA (Building as Learning Aid) approach, transforming the school building into a mathematical learning resource. The Maths Lab, Maths Competitions and Olympiads further develop logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Our Bengal Safari visit also offers opportunities to explore mathematical concepts through observation and practical experiences.

In EVS, educational visits to Science City, hands-on experiments, surveys, research and virtual tours make learning engaging and meaningful. Language activities and spelling competitions nurture communication and vocabulary.

We recognise the Primary Section as a crucial bridge between Pre-Primary and Middle School, where we strive to build strong academic foundations, curiosity, confidence and lifelong learning skills.

For parents, these three years are often when a child’s attitude to learning takes shape. A child who discovers that maths can be measured on a staircase, or that a question about plants can be answered by a small experiment, tends to stay curious. That curiosity — together with steady habits of reading, careful work and teamwork — is what the Primary Section sets out to build before children move up to middle school.

Teaching and learning

How learning happens in the Primary Section

Children between eight and ten are ready for more depth, but they still learn best by doing. Each subject therefore starts with something to touch, see, measure or ask about.

01

BaLA: the building as a learning aid

Building as Learning Aid turns corridors, floors, steps and walls into maths resources. Children measure, estimate, find angles and spot patterns and shapes in the spaces they walk through every day, so geometry and measurement become concrete rather than abstract.

02

Maths Lab, competitions and Olympiads

In the Maths Lab, children use models and manipulatives to explore number, fractions and shape. Maths competitions and Olympiads give interested pupils a chance to stretch their logical reasoning and problem-solving and to enjoy a healthy challenge.

03

Learning on the Bengal Safari visit

The Bengal Safari visit is a day of learning outdoors. Children observe animals and habitats, count, compare, estimate distances and record what they see, bringing mathematics and environmental studies together in one experience.

04

EVS through enquiry

Environmental Studies is taught through experiments, surveys, small research tasks, virtual tours and educational visits to Science City. Children learn to ask a question, gather information and explain what they found in their own words.

05

Language and communication

Reading, writing, speaking and listening grow through class discussions, reading activities and spelling competitions. Children build vocabulary and accuracy, and gain the confidence to present ideas to classmates.

06

Beyond the classroom

Art, music, dance, physical education, chess and sport are part of the week. Inter-house events and celebrations such as National Sports Day give every child a chance to take part, try something new and be recognised.

For parents

What parents can expect

More subjects, steady habits

Classes III to V introduce more structured study across languages, mathematics and EVS. Teachers help children build routines — reading daily, keeping notebooks neat, finishing tasks on time — that make the move to middle school easier.

Assessment that guides learning

Children are assessed through class work, projects, activities and periodic tests in line with CBSE practice. The aim is to show what a child understands and what needs more practice, not simply to rank.

Day boarding from Class III

From Class III, working families can choose day boarding from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, which includes lunch, supervised prep with the school’s educators, coached sport and evening snacks.

Full boarding for families further away

Full boarding for Classes III to X is offered in separate residences for boys and girls, with resident staff, supervised study and vegetarian meals — an option many families from Darjeeling, Sikkim, Bihar and the Dooars consider.

Regular contact with teachers

Parents follow progress through the school’s parent portal, reached from the Parent Login button on this website, and at parent-teacher meetings. If your child finds a subject difficult or seems unsettled, speak to the class teacher early.

At home

How you can support your child

  • Keep a short daily reading habit, and let your child choose some of the books.
  • Look for maths at home: measuring while cooking, telling time, handling change.
  • Encourage questions about nature and science, and look up answers together.
  • Help your child pack their own bag and check their timetable each evening.
  • Talk about school projects and visits, and ask your child to teach you something new.
  • Limit screen time on school nights and protect time for play and sleep.

Admission to the Primary Section

New students join Classes III to V subject to available seats, usually at about eight to ten years of age. The latest marksheet and a transfer certificate are required, and an age-appropriate interaction helps teachers with class placement. If your child is moving from another board, share the subjects studied so far.
