About the Middle Section

The Middle Section of Mayoor School Siliguri, comprising Classes VI to VIII, is a significant stage where students gradually transition towards adolescence and independent learning. Our approach focuses on making learning engaging, enjoyable and application-oriented, nurturing students as creators, thinkers and analysts.

Through activities such as scavenger hunts, field trips, Mathematics and Science Lab experiments, students are encouraged to explore, question, analyse and apply concepts. Resources like Oxford Language and First in Maths further strengthen their conceptual understanding and skills.

We provide opportunities to showcase their abilities through various intra-school and inter-school competitions, including project-making, PPT presentations, Spellathon, spelling contests, creative writing and public speaking.

At this stage, our emphasis is on developing creativity, critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills. We believe that a strong Middle Section foundation prepares students to confidently meet the academic challenges of the Secondary and Senior Secondary stages and beyond.

Parents often notice their child changing quickly between Class VI and Class VIII: wanting more independence, forming stronger opinions and comparing themselves with friends. The Middle Section is designed with this in mind. Students are given real responsibility — leading a group project, presenting to the class, representing their house — while teachers stay close enough to guide, encourage and step in when needed.

Teaching and learning

How learning happens in the Middle Section

Middle-school students want to know why something matters. Lessons therefore connect each concept to an experiment, a problem, a project or a real place.

01

Mathematics and Science Labs

Regular lab sessions let students test ideas for themselves: building models, measuring, observing and recording results. Hands-on work in the labs turns formulas and definitions into something students have seen working with their own eyes.

02

Scavenger hunts and field trips

Scavenger hunts send students looking for clues that apply what they have learnt, while field trips and industry visits show how science, geography and economics work outside school. Both build teamwork and curiosity.

03

Oxford Language and First in Maths

Oxford Language resources strengthen reading, grammar and writing, and First in Maths offers practice that builds speed, accuracy and confidence with number. Together they reinforce conceptual understanding beyond the textbook.

04

Competitions that build confidence

Intra-school and inter-school competitions — project-making, PPT presentations, Spellathon, spelling contests, creative writing and public speaking — give students a stage to share their work and learn to handle feedback.

05

STEAM, robotics and design thinking

Students take part in STEAM and robotics activities, design-and-build challenges such as paper bridges, and simple coding. These experiences encourage them to plan, test, fail safely and improve — the habits of real problem-solvers.

06

Growing up with support

Adolescence brings new questions and feelings. Class teachers, counselling and wellness support, sport, yoga and the arts help students manage friendships, stress and screen habits while building self-discipline.

For parents

What parents can expect

Greater independence

Students in Classes VI to VIII manage a wider timetable, more subjects and longer projects. Teachers gradually expect them to plan their work, meet deadlines and ask for help when they need it.

Assessment with feedback

Learning is checked through class work, projects, presentations, lab work and periodic tests, in line with CBSE practice. Feedback shows students what to improve, which matters as much as the marks.

Clear communication with parents

Parents follow progress through the school’s parent portal, available from the Parent Login button on this website, and through parent-teacher meetings. Share any concern early so the school can help.

Day boarding and boarding

Day boarding (3:00–6:00 PM) adds lunch, supervised prep, coached sport and snacks. Full boarding offers separate residences for boys and girls with structured evening study from 7:00 PM and resident staff.

Care and wellbeing

The campus has controlled access, CCTV, trained guards and a medical infirmary, with counselling and wellness support for students. School buses run with GPS tracking, CCTV and trained attendants.

At home

How you can support your child

  • Agree a regular homework time and a quiet, phone-free place to study.
  • Ask your child to explain a lab experiment or project to you in their own words.
  • Encourage reading beyond school books: newspapers, stories, biographies.
  • Support participation in at least one competition, sport or art each term.
  • Talk openly about friendships, online safety and managing pressure.
  • Celebrate improvement and effort, not only top results.

Admission to the Middle Section

New students join Classes VI to VIII subject to available seats, usually at about eleven to thirteen years of age. Bring the latest marksheet and a transfer certificate; an age-appropriate interaction helps with class placement. If your child is moving from a state board or ICSE school, share the subjects studied so the school can advise on any bridging support.
