About the Pre-Primary Wing

At Mayoor School Siliguri, the Tiny Tots Pre-Primary Wing (Nursery to Grade II) is built around CARE – Cooperation, Acceptance, Resilience and Empathy, nurturing not just young learners but compassionate, confident and independent individuals. Our curriculum places the child at the centre of every learning experience, prioritising active participation, exploration and joyful discovery over passive instruction.

Through engaging Circle Time, children develop communication, listening, sharing and social skills. Colour Days introduce colours through real-life objects, hands-on exploration and meaningful experiences, helping children connect classroom concepts with their surroundings. Activity-based learning, storytelling, music, movement, role-play, sensory play and creative tasks make every concept experiential and enjoyable.

Our developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum encourages every child to participate, question, experiment and express themselves. With age-appropriate milestones guiding their progress, we create a nurturing environment where curiosity is celebrated, individuality is respected and every little step towards learning is valued.

The wing spans the foundational stage described in India’s National Education Policy 2020: three pre-primary years in Nursery, LKG and UKG, followed by Classes I and II. Keeping these five years together means children grow up in one familiar, caring setting during the years in which they learn to speak up, share, read their first words and count with confidence.

Teaching and learning

How young children learn in our Pre-Primary Wing

Every day in the wing balances structure and freedom. Short, focused activities sit alongside free play, so children stay curious without becoming tired or anxious.

01

Circle Time

Each day begins with children sitting together with their teacher to greet one another, talk about their news, sing and share. It builds listening, turn-taking and the confidence to speak in a group — skills that support every later subject.

02

Colour Days

On Colour Days, a single colour becomes the theme of the day. Children bring and find objects of that colour, sort them, name them and use them in art and play, so a simple concept connects to the world around them.

03

Play, senses and movement

Sensory play, building, role-play corners, music and movement help children develop fine and gross motor skills, coordination and imagination. Play is planned with a purpose, so every activity quietly teaches something.

04

Stories and early language

Storytelling, picture books, rhymes and conversation grow vocabulary and a love of books. Children move gradually from listening and retelling to recognising letters and sounds, and then to reading and writing simple words and sentences.

05

Early numbers and patterns

Counting games, shapes, sorting, matching and simple worksheets introduce number sense and logical thinking. Children handle real objects before they work on paper, so ideas like more, less, bigger and smaller make sense.

06

CARE in everyday moments

Cooperation is practised in group games, Acceptance in celebrating each other’s differences, Resilience in trying again after a mistake, and Empathy in caring for a friend. Teachers model these values all day, not only in a lesson.

For parents

What parents can expect

A gentle settling-in period

Starting school is a big change for a three- or four-year-old. Teachers help children settle at their own pace, and parents are encouraged to share their child’s routines, likes, fears and health needs before the first day.

Progress through milestones, not exams

Young children are observed against age-appropriate milestones in language, numbers, movement, social skills and independence. Ask your child’s teacher how progress is recorded and shared during the year.

Regular contact with families

Parents receive school updates through the parent portal, reached from the Parent Login button on this website, as well as meetings with teachers. Early, honest conversations help children most.

Safe, child-friendly spaces

Children learn in bright, air-conditioned classrooms and use a dedicated indoor play area. The campus has controlled access, CCTV and a medical infirmary, and school buses run with GPS tracking and attendants.

At home

How you can support your child

  • Read aloud with your child every day, even for ten minutes, and talk about the pictures.
  • Let your child dress, pack a bag and tidy toys on their own to build independence.
  • Count, sort and name colours together while cooking, shopping or travelling.
  • Keep a regular bedtime so your child arrives at school rested and ready to learn.
  • Ask about the best part of the school day rather than ‘What did you learn?’
  • Praise effort and kindness, not only correct answers.
