Overview
Siliguri has a wide choice of CBSE schools, and almost every one describes itself as the best. This guide from Mayoor School Siliguri sets out criteria you can check for yourself, so you can compare any school — including ours — on evidence rather than advertising. Where we use Mayoor as an example, it is to show what to look for, not to rank other schools.

1. Confirm the CBSE affiliation
Every genuinely CBSE-affiliated school has an affiliation number that you can look up on CBSE’s SARAS portal. Check that the name and address match the campus you are visiting and note the level of affiliation (secondary or senior secondary). Mayoor School Siliguri’s affiliation number is 2430471.

2. Read the mandatory public disclosure
CBSE requires affiliated schools to publish a mandatory public disclosure on their website, covering documents, staff, results and infrastructure. It is one of the most useful and least read sources for parents. Look for the disclosure on the school’s website — ours is on the mandatory public disclosure page — and compare the details with what you see on your visit.

3. Look at teaching, not just buildings
Ask about teacher qualifications, how many teachers each class has and how new teachers are trained. A teacher-section ratio describes how many teachers a school has for each class section; it is not the same as a teacher-to-student ratio or class size. Mayoor lists a teacher-section ratio of 1.5:1. Ask every school for its class size in your child’s year.

4. Check results and progression
Ask for recent Class X and XII results where a school has them, and how results are reported. A newer school may not yet have board-examination results; in that case, ask how progress is assessed and shared with parents in the earlier classes.

5. Safety and wellbeing
Ask about controlled campus access, CCTV, staff background checks, transport safety, the medical room, counselling and how bullying is handled. A good school will answer these questions directly and show you the arrangements.

6. Learning beyond the textbook
CBSE schools differ greatly in labs, libraries, sports, arts and clubs. Ask how often children actually use these facilities, not only whether they exist. At Mayoor, for example, the published programme includes STEAM, AI and robotics, art in the Artist Village, music, dance and Excursions & Field Visits.

7. Fees: the full yearly cost
Compare the total yearly cost, not just monthly tuition. Ask for registration, admission and annual charges, security deposits, transport, meals, uniforms and books, and whether fees are paid monthly, quarterly or annually. A school that publishes its fee structure, as Mayoor does on its fee structure page, makes this comparison easier.

8. Distance and daily routine
A shorter journey can matter more than a longer list of facilities, particularly for young children. Time the school run at the actual start time, and ask which areas the school bus covers.

9. Day school, day boarding or boarding
If you are considering boarding, visit the residences, ask about supervision at night, food, laundry, visiting rules and how homesickness is handled. Our guide to boarding life at Mayoor shows the kind of detail to ask any school for.

10. Values and culture
Spend time on campus. How do students and teachers speak to each other? How are mistakes handled? At Mayoor, the Namaste culture makes courtesy and gratitude part of the school day; other schools have their own traditions. Choose the culture that fits your child.
